Wpomatic 'fetch' brings web server down (100% CPU)

I have a setup with 10 feeds, running on Linux (Lighttp). Every cron update, or manual update, causes the CPU to peak to 100% (php5-cgi process) and it never comes back down until I restart the webserver. During the 100% CPU, obviously the site and the admin site are down.

I can confirm this issue as well. I might be able to provide some strace information.

I forgot to mention, I'm using Apache2 with mpm_worker and php5-fastcgi or Debian Etch.
