This puts in a link to the rss feed url instead of the actual element for an individual element of the rss feed. Isn't it supposed to put in a link to the element?

That's what it does. Check your /wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/help.php?item=post_templates & /wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/help.php?item=post_templates_examples from Campaigns;Edit;Options tab (under the Custom post template window) for Supported tags & usage.
